It seems like it is almost every year that one F1 team or another comes up with a clever bit of tech that the rest of the field then rushes to copy. Why don't they just patent their breakthroughs, to lock in their advantage? Is it against the regs?

My guess is that they can patent it all they want, but that won't stop somebody from reverse engineering it and making their own patentable system.

My guess is that the patent process takes too long, would have to be done for each individual country they race in and simply isn't worth it for the limited amount of time a team would be able to benefit from something patentable before it isn't allowed anymore.
Also, aren't patent applications made public? Eg. It would essentially give away the ideas to other teams?
